When you see a post that deserves much signal boost.
When you post something that gets way more notes than you ever expected.

DO NOT reblog photos of Mike Brown’s body lying on the street. His family has requested that these photos not be spread around. Please respect their wishes.

Very importantly, stay alert. Read everything you can on the subject. The reports on The New York Times, Al Jazeera, and other news outlets are very limited, especially because the police in Ferguson are going to great lengths to keep reporters out. Seek out what you can online and from first hand sources, if you know anyone in the area. Listen to the stories of those who have been affected by this tragedy and other similar ones. Educate yourself as much as you possibly can so you can help make sure the right people are heard.

Hi, my name is NAME. I live in PLACE, and I am a constituent of ELECTED OFFICIAL. I am calling because the police department of Ferguson, Missouri is using federally funded weapons against unarmed American citizens in a reckless, inappropriate, and unlawful manner. I am calling to request immediate action to protect the people of Ferguson and to fully investigate the Ferguson Police Department’s actions, including the killing of Michael Brown and the subsequent abuse of protestors and arrest of journalists and elected officials. I believe that all civil rights and civil liberties, including the right to free speech and lawful assembly, are very important, and I hope that ELECTED OFFICIAL agrees with me. Thank you for your time.

You can use this handy form (http://ift.tt/1v382Xb) from the League of Women Voters to identify your elected officials. I am going to call my U.S. senators and congressmen and the president’s office. If you can’t call, you can e-mail, but I’ve been told phone calls count more.

Sometimes when you call they ask some questions about who you are or where you live, but it’s really painless usually. And, call even if you think your rep is an asshole — whoever answers the phone is trained to be polite. If they get enough calls, they usually wind up listening at some point.

wanna know the thing that has surprised me most in all my time working in DC? my number one wacky U.S. capital fact?

these calls actually matter you guys I am not joking.

before I got here I would see organizations asking people to call or email their representatives and kind of write it off like “oh politicians don’t listen to that stuff.” but in fact! there are correspondence managers and other people whose job is to keep track of the opinions expressed in all the calls/emails/letters that they get, and that does inform how the office chooses to respond - you hear in meetings “we’ve been getting a lot of calls in support of ____, but none opposing it, so we don’t see any benefit to opposing it” or “this isn’t a priority to our constituents” or whatever. This isn’t to say that politicians only ever do what their constituents want but it does factor in, if for no other reason than that politicians like being voted for repeatedly.

all of which is to say! I think this is a good idea. If you can’t call, that is fine. you can send an email via any congressional representative’s website, or even print and mail a letter - the addresses are also listed on their websites. You could have a letter-writing party or a call-in party, or if you’re a college student, maybe table in the student center with laptops where passers-by can send emails on your congressional reps’ websites.

Hey guys, I made a quick post about this a few hours ago from mobile, but I thought I’d write it up again so its more rebloggable and can reach and help more people.

Sites like Movie Triggers and Phobias at the Movies have been going around tumblr and genuinely trying their best to update their content and warn people about triggers/phobias that could be present in a movie they’re about to watch. Unfortunately, both of these sites are fairly new and I imagine their relatively small staffs can’t possibly watch every movie you might have an interest in watching.

For future reference, IMDB’s Parent Guides are pretty useful for this kind of thing as well and they exist for practically every movie you can think of. They border on being spoiler-y sometimes, but overall I imagine they could be a big help to some people!

To find a movie’s guide, nine times out of ten all you have to do is type in a movie’s name + “IMDB Parents Guide” into google. Alternatively, you can go through IMDB’s site and click the ‘Parents Guide’ option on the sidebar.

To see how in-depth they go at warning people, [here’s] the parents guide to The Lion King. Obviously they warn for Mufasa’s death, but they also mention that Zazu is knocked around a bit during a music number. For comparison with a movie not originally intended for children, [here] is the guide for Little Shop of Horrors, which warns for blood and even the mention of blood despite the only blood being drops from a characters’ finger/hand.

Some of the warnings can seem a little silly/humorous, but all in all I can see it being a huge help to those who want or need it. Also notable - these parents guides are also made for tv shows. (although it presents more of an over-arching series generalization than an episode by episode analysis, it can still prepare someone for what to expect)

ESTP: super attractive physically but it’s all downhill from there. never quite know what they’re going to do next but you can probably bet it will be irresponsible. somehow still lovable.

ESTJ: loud, logical, and get shit done — they are the warrior class of the life rpg. power stats make them unbeatable and if you encounter one, maybe just curl up and forfeit, to save time.

ESFP: giggly little shits. fun fun fun till her daddy takes the t-bird away. great for lifting your mood, not that great at lifting your credit score.

ESFJ: too appropriate, totally lacking in awkwardness. they’ll never forget your birthday, which will make you feel like shit when you constantly forget theirs.

ENTP: excellent companions if you enjoy people who instantly see through all your shit. very clever and very intuitive, you can’t fool them. i suggest you invest in other friends — ones you *can* fool.

ENTJ: impatient with people who make mistakes, namely, everyone. they’ll respect you if you stand up to them but why do that when you can run away instead. cuddle them and see what happens. i’m curious.

ENFP: too puppy to live. best suited for the profession of musical nanny. not advised for use around an open flame.

ENFJ: way too charming and capable, maybe they should stop making everyone else look bad. prone to making other people care about stuff they didn’t want to care about. so annoying.

ISTP: such butts. best suited for an apocalypse scenario, if no such scenario exists, they will create danger because they get bored. don’t encourage them, but don’t discourage them, as reverse psychology works too well.

ISTJ: low drama and low maintenance, best value at this price tier. best suited to actual human existence. least weird, which makes them kinda weird.

ISFP: squishy little darlings you might want to keep in your pocket, but please don’t or they will become forlorn. they notice everything, and it’s unnerving.

ISFJ: quietly and proudly do things for others. if you have a ring you need to deliver to mordor, take an ISFJ along with you for best results.

INTP: cute intergalactic spiders you want to hug and mistrust. prone to making you laugh but then days later you will wonder whether you were the butt of the joke.

INTJ: major dicks and kinda proud of it. prone to being right. prone to liking trance music way too much. all the ones i’ve ever met have been unexpectedly kinky. so i guess, expectedly.

INFP: they fall out of the sky and are raised by unicorns. if you feed one it will follow you home. they dissipate in water.

INFJ: chameleons appropriating your emotions and going quietly mad. prone to meltdowns and needing lots of naps.

I feel like while this is all useful information about how things are supposed to go, we should all be mindful when sharing that pretty much none of this applies in reality to anyone other than white people. People aren’t being shot by the police because they didn’t know their rights or didn’t know how they were supposed to act or what to say. They’re being shot because they are black and alive in America.
