before I got here I would see organizations asking people to call or email their representatives and kind of write it off like “oh politicians don’t listen to that stuff.” but in fact! there are correspondence managers and other people whose job is to keep track of the opinions expressed in all the calls/emails/letters that they get, and that does inform how the office chooses to respond - you hear in meetings “we’ve been getting a lot of calls in support of ____, but none opposing it, so we don’t see any benefit to opposing it” or “this isn’t a priority to our constituents” or whatever. This isn’t to say that politicians only ever do what their constituents want but it does factor in, if for no other reason than that politicians like being voted for repeatedly.

Sites like Movie Triggers and Phobias at the Movies have been going around tumblr and genuinely trying their best to update their content and warn people about triggers/phobias that could be present in a movie they’re about to watch. Unfortunately, both of these sites are fairly new and I imagine their relatively small staffs can’t possibly watch every movie you might have an interest in watching.
For future reference, IMDB’s Parent Guides are pretty useful for this kind of thing as well and they exist for practically every movie you can think of. They border on being spoiler-y sometimes, but overall I imagine they could be a big help to some people!
To find a movie’s guide, nine times out of ten all you have to do is type in a movie’s name + “IMDB Parents Guide” into google. Alternatively, you can go through IMDB’s site and click the ‘Parents Guide’ option on the sidebar.
To see how in-depth they go at warning people, [here’s] the parents guide to The Lion King. Obviously they warn for Mufasa’s death, but they also mention that Zazu is knocked around a bit during a music number. For comparison with a movie not originally intended for children, [here] is the guide for Little Shop of Horrors, which warns for blood and even the mention of blood despite the only blood being drops from a characters’ finger/hand.
Some of the warnings can seem a little silly/humorous, but all in all I can see it being a huge help to those who want or need it. Also notable - these parents guides are also made for tv shows. (although it presents more of an over-arching series generalization than an episode by episode analysis, it can still prepare someone for what to expect)

I feel like while this is all useful information about how things are supposed to go, we should all be mindful when sharing that pretty much none of this applies in reality to anyone other than white people. People aren’t being shot by the police because they didn’t know their rights or didn’t know how they were supposed to act or what to say. They’re being shot because they are black and alive in America.
