Bobbi Brown Old Hollywood Soft Gold Smoke Tutorial

Took a shot at the Bobbi Brown Old Hollywood collection, and instead of doing a typical 40s-50s look, I kept with the flicked eyeliner, flushed cheeks and red lips, but updated it with a shimmery smoky lid in a “cat-eye” shape instead of a “kitten eye”, dewy skin, and dripping-wet lacquered lips.

(Most products used were from Bobbi Brown unless stated otherwise.)

Product note: One thing I’ve fallen for is the Long-wear Cream Shadow Stick. They’re all incredibly smooth and pigmented, plus you get plenty of time to blend and smudge them out before they set. Here I used Tuxedo Black. If you’re not able to get hold of it, use a creamy black pencil.

Tip: This bit of black along the lower lash line makes the “cat eye” look. The main difference between “kitten” and “cat” eye is whether you bring liner down along the lower lash line. Traditional kitten liner runs only along the upper lashes. Liner along the lower lash line creates an exaggerated almond shape which is more sultry and catty.

Tip: To get the perfect, flattering angle to your flick, extend your liner outwards at the exact same angle as your lower lash line.

Here are 6 shades of creamy nudes from 3 brands; MAC, The Body Shop, and Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics.

Café Latte: MAC Fresh Brew

This straight brown nude is a glossy Lustre finish, and one of the few nudes that actually works beautifully on dark skins because it creates the creamy effect without looking chalky.

Hot Chocolate Foam: MAC Blankety

Creamy beige but with an almost-pink tinge, the way the foam capping hot chocolate can look. This Amplified lipstick is opaque, and isn’t all that flattering on darker skins because the pale pink undertone can look chalky and grey. But it’s gorgeous on lighter skins.

Hazelnut Latte: The Body Shop Colour Crush 220

A straight beige without pink or orange undertones. Works for pale to medium skins.

Chai Latte: The Body Shop Colour Crush 310

A slightly mauve-toned medium beige nude that works on medium to tan skins and paler skins with a pink undertone. On very pale yellow-toned skins, the slightly plummy undertones might sometimes make the skin look dull or sallow.

Thai Milk Tea: OCC Kava Kava

Strong milk teas in Thailand come with a distinctive orange-red tone (and taste absolutely wonderful by the way). The orange tone makes these lip colors look gorgeous on pale skins and look like a pastel creamy-orange against medium to darker skins. Works better on yellow/gold-toned skins.

Caramel Latte: OCC Marion

This is one of the best shades for mediterranean/olive toned skins because it’s got just enough warmth in the beige to complement tanned skins. Also works as a soft nude on darker skins, and a deeper nude on pale skins without looking grey or corpse-like. Probably my favorite “nude” brown.

One of the easiest and most flattering looks to pull off a nude lip. Here is an easy step-by-step, and some tips to making it more wearable!

Try:

Rich browns, charcoal and grey, or even deep jewel tone on the lids

A pink or peach blush that isn’t too neutral or deep in color. A soft wash of pink or peach adds color back into your face. Don’t think you have to match your blush to your lip color when you’re wearing nudes.

To avoid the “concealer lip”, which can be quite unflattering for many people, try a nude lip pencil that matches your lip color closely as a base, or a nude lipstick that is one shade deeper than your skin tone. (If you have darker skin, a slightly sheer formula like Fresh Brew is easier yo pull off than an opaque color.)

For this look, I’m using a charcoal grey cream shadow.

Tip: Spritz your brush with a little alcohol-free toner or something like MAC Fix+ and it will be easier to pick up and blend cream shadows which might have dried out a bit.

Tip: Using a matte brown instead of black along the lower lash line is a way to add extra definition without the whole look getting too heavy, or making small eyes look even smaller.

Can we just stop and talk about this for a minute?

Thresh doesn’t make an alliance. Thresh doesn’t waste time liking her. Thresh knows that either he must kill her or she must kill him for one of them to win.

But this is the only way he can repay her for protecting Rue when he couldn’t. It’s the only way he can repay her for honoring Rue when he couldn’t. He honors her by sparing her friend, the girl who would have died for her.

The revolution really doesn’t start with Katniss.

It starts with Rue.

SOMEBODY FINALLY SAID IT

This is exactly the point I’ve been trying to make for years. Okay, so the revolution gets it’s kindling with Katniss. She volunteers, well that’s new, she rebels in the display of talents by shooting the apple. This triggers her perfect score, okay. These aren’t really “Revolutionary” though. 

It’s not even revolutionary when Peeta professes his love, because, let’s face it, the rules of the game haven’t changed. They’re still just two kids who would have to KILL each other to win. Without a doubt, it would bring some interest to the games, so the Capitol makes propaganda about it. The “Star Crossed Lovers” in a game of life and death.

But what changes the game is Rue. Right away from her introduction in the books we know Rue is going to be somewhat of a big deal. She was compared to the most important character to Katniss, Prim, so that’s a huge indicator. She’s small, young, she’s what Prim would have been.

So Katniss instantly feels a subconscious pull toward her. 

When they meet in the trees, Katniss could have killed Rue easily, and Rue probably could have pulled a sneak attack or alerted the Careers of Katniss’s presence. Instead, Rue points out the Tracker Jacker nest.

Then it escalates, Rue and Katniss become an odd team, they’re an alliance, which is never new in the Hunger Games, as forming teams and then betraying them at the end seems to be a common, but there’s is different. It’s close, it’s sisterly, protective.

And then Rue get’s impaled. Katniss kills her first tribute with ease after that. Comparing it to hunting game. Katniss holds Rue, she cries, and then she sings. She sings for Rue a song of promised safety and warmth, something completely absent in the arena. 

And this is where the metaphorical canon fires. Katniss could have left Rue, the hovercraft would have been along to pick her up, but she can’t. She’s morally obligated to love this girl as much as possible. And this is where the revolution starts. 

She honors the dead. She honors a dead tribute from a district she’d never seen, a person she’d known for only a short period of time. But she throws away Hunger Games norms. She rejects them completely.

In the Hunger Games you’re supposed to kill mercilessly and leave the victims for the plain box they’re shipped home in. 

Katniss gives Rue a funeral in the Games, she decorates the body, she makes it look like Rue is sleeping. Like no harm had come. Katniss just ignited the coals that Rue had placed.

Rue’s District sends a parachute. Homemade bread. 

Then Thresh kills Clove and distracts Cato by taking his bag. 

The fire is going now, and the actions in Catching Fire are even more obvious.

The Speech for Rue. Peeta’s painting. Everything eludes back to this one little girl who became Katniss’s family.

So the revolution never started with Katniss, she was just the tinder for Rue’s ignition. 

Rue was the real Mockingjay.

HAIL, FELLOW JEWISH COOKS AND APPRECIATORS OF JEWISH COOKERY!  HAPPY OUR FUCKING OIL LASTS LONGER THAN YOUR OPPRESSION WEEK!  LET’S MAKE SOME GODDAMN DELICIOUS MATZAH BALL SOUP!  THIS RECIPE WILL NOT REQUIRE YOU TO CASTRATE A MATZAH.

YOU ONLY NEED A FEW THINGS, AND THE ONLY ONES YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN’T DO WITHOUT ARE SOME EGGS AND MATZAH MEAL.  YOU CAN MAKE MATZAH MEAL BY POUNDING MATZAH INTO DUST WITH YOUR OWN HANDS (OR FOOD PROCESSOR), OR YOU CAN BUY IT.

BEGIN BY MIXING YOUR INGREDIENTS IN THE PROPORTION OF TWOS: FOR EVERY 1/2 CUP OF MATZAH MEAL, YOU NEED TWO EGGS, TWO TABLESPOONS OF WATER OR CHICKEN STOCK, AND TWO TABLESPOONS OF OLIVE OIL.  IF YOUR OLIVE OIL IS BUSY FIGHTING OPPRESSION, USE ANY KIND OF VEGETABLE OIL.  ADD A LITTLE BIT OF SALT IF YOU LIKE THINGS TO HAVE SALT IN THEM.

MIX UNTIL UNIFORMLY GOOEY, THEN PUT IN A COVERED CONTAINER AND PUT IN THE FRIDGE FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES.  I DO NOT KNOW WHAT ELDRITCH MAGIC HAPPENS DURING THIS STEP, BUT IT IS MAGIC INDEED, AND YOU MAY NOT SKIP IT. THE MATZAH GOO MUST HAVE ITS FIFTEEN MINUTES.

IN THE MEANTIME, PREPARE CHICKEN SOUP IN THE MANNER OF YOUR LIKING.  ANYTHING FROM PLAIN CANNED BROTH TO A MAGNIFICENT FEAST IN A POT WILL DO.  OR VEGETABLE SOUP IF YOU ARE NOT AN EATER OF FLESH.

BRING YOUR SOUP TO A BOIL. RETRIEVE THE MATZAH GOO FROM THE FRIDGE AND FORM IT INTO BALLS ABOUT AN INCH ACROSS. (SOME PEOPLE MAKE GIANT MATZAH SPHERES OF THREE INCHES. THESE PEOPLE ARE STRANGE IN THEIR WAYS AND I SHALL SPEAK NO MORE OF THEM.)  CAST MERCY ASIDE AND DROP EACH MATZAH BALL INTO THE BOILING SOUP.

WHEN ALL THE GOO HAS BEEN BALLED AND ALL THE BALLS HAVE BEEN SOUPED, REDUCE HEAT TO A SIMMER, COVER THE POT, AND ALLOW TO COOK FOR TEN MINUTES. THE MATZAH BALLS SHOULD BE FLOATING BUT STILL FIRM WHEN THEY ARE DONE.

(OPINIONS DIFFER ON MATZAH BALL FIRMNESS, AND MANY BATTLES HAVE BEEN FOUGHT. EXPERIMENTATION MAY BE NECESSARY TO FIND YOUR OWN PREFERRED BALL FIRMNESS.)

Shu Uemura “Black Princess” Look: Enchanted Black Parallel Palette

This is the second part of my “Pink vs Black” tutorial duo. (You didn’t think I’d stop at the Pink look did you?)

The Enchanted Black Parallel Palette is filled with purples, and a couple of contrasting shades like gold and green, for added drama. Unlike the pink palette, this is a palette where you’ll find tons of smoky eye options.

If your preference is for strong eye looks, you’ll get more use out of this set.

Lashes - I was supposed to use the stunningly dramatic Black Jewel On Wing premium lashes but they are way too large for my eyes, and I was not about to cut up a pair of $125 hand-made lashes! So I just used a pair of Katy Perry purple Ka-pow lashes.

Extra: If your glue is visible, you might want to go over the lash band with a little black liner just to darken it.
