in tonight’s episode of kate-unexpectedly-gets-to-play-therapist, we realized that possibly giving small children awards and recognizing them officially in front of their peers as being “compassionate” and “always thinking of others” might fuck with them and their self-esteem just a bit.
you would not think this would be a formative memory from my childhood but ho shit it is because I remember helping someone after they chose me for the award and feeling horribly self-conscious about it like I had to be doing it on purpose because I’d been recognized as this ~good~ person and I think that’s the first time I ever remember feeling like a terrible person for doing a good thing.
