The Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) is performing a large-scale survey.

We are looking for any respondents who are part of the asexual spectrum, as well as people who are not part of the asexual spectrum. This survey includes some sensitive questions about sexual topics. Please distribute this announcement.

The survey is open for some time. Later, statistical results will be published, providing crucial information about the demographics and needs of asexual-spectrum people.

No, you’re not being irrational.  I apologize, we made a major mistake there.  I thought an “other” option was listed, but apparently we missed it in editing.  We can’t edit question options while the survey is still running, but we will be sure to fix it next time.

If you are affected by this issue, I suggest leaving the question blank.

I. am a little embarrassed you saw my rant before I actually got up the spoons to write the Calm Rational Adult email I was going to, but thank you so much for responding as quickly as you did even though I was really rude. (I. have got to remember that reblogs are direct communication with the OP. *headdesk*)

I’m also a little embarrassed that I didn’t think to try skipping the question and just assumed it was non-optional, so thank you for letting me know that!

I saw the further reblogs raising other issues with the list and some people’s suggestions - I know that the list used by the SATs, for example, is very comprehensive (it even has my faith, Unitarian Universalism listed, and there are fewer of us than there are taxi cab drivers.), but as you were concerned about, it is rather long and unwieldy.

One solution might be to have a two-step question - the first one being generic options like ‘Christian’ ‘Muslim’ ‘Jewish’ ‘Hindu’ ‘Pagan’ ‘Other’ ‘Non-Religious’, with each option then opening the appropriate list of more specific choices. (I’m not sure how easy that is to do in google forms, though.)

A similar option would be to have the generic options and then allow write-ins of specifics - the drawback here is that it would take more human effort when analyzing survey results later.

I hate surveys. They are incredibly frustrating and I’m TERRIBLE at them.

I left feedback about it, at least? I mean, maybe my issues with answering the questions were dumb, but I’m betting I’m not the only neuroatypical person taking the survey and other people might have trouble too.

This is the feedback I gave:

I found parts of it kind of inaccessible - I’m neuroatypical and surveys are hard for me, because I want to give accurate answers and find it very frustrating when options don’t fit. It’d be helpful to have more qualified answers and maybe even explanations of what the question is actually asking, as a lot of times autistic folks get tripped up by answering the question they were specifically asked and not the question the asker actually wanted the answer to - a classic example is ‘how would you describe yourself?’ an autistic person might well respond with the words they would use to describe themselves to others (ex ‘nice, cheerful, etc) instead of answering the intended question of ‘how do you see/feel about yourself’.

It also assumed a lot of self-knowledge - I don’t really know how to quantify and romantic or sexual attractions I’ve had, or even really what those terms are meant to describe when it comes to my own experiences.

The sexual experience questions would also benefit from more specific questions like ‘giving x’ ‘receiving x’ or ‘giving and receiving x’ and an additional section with the same options but for ‘interest in’ rather than ‘experience with’ - for example, almost all of the sexual activity I’ve really ever participated in only involved me touching the other person sexually, and right now, that’s the only kind of sexual exploration I feel comfortable with.

One other note: the religion options are rather lacking, most notably in that there isn’t an ‘other - religious’ option as well as an ‘other - nonreligious’ one.

Does it make sense, do you think? Did I adequately explain the problems I had filling out the survey, in a way people will (probably) understand?
